Quick Fix: St Tropez Updo

It’s all fun and games when you’re in St Tropez, from swimming in the sea, relaxing on the beach or dancing at Bagatelle. That is, until you remember you have a foundation gala to attend: suddenly you realise your glossy mane has been transformed into an unwieldy mess, coated in salt water, sand and god forbid, Champagne!

For my second post in the quick fix series, I’m going to share my tips on how to create a quick and easy chignon, similar to the style I wore to the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation Gala. With just a few products you can create a sophisticated look that works for both straight hair like mine, as well as for curlier locks. The best part is, this relaxed, holiday appropriate style is achievable with minimal time and effort!

Step One:

The sea breeze of Saint Tropez demands a little extra care to ensure hair is shiny for the perfect up-do. After using a refreshing shampoo, rinse with cool water and gently squeeze hair dry with a clean towel. For ultra sun-kissed glossy hair, I like to use just a little Drybar Gold Mine Shimmering Leave-In Conditioner, which contains a gold pigment! Ensure you apply it evenly to ensure any split ends or damage is covered.

Step Two:

Once hair starts to dry, spritz with a texturising spray to make sure hair won’t be too clean to slick back (up-dos work best with slightly dirty hair!). Percy & Reed Texturising Spray is perfect because it’s lightweight enough to not weigh down my hair after applying leave-in conditioner. If you’ve got curly hair, the spray will help to define curls – after application all you need to do is let hair air dry whilst you apply makeup. If you’ve got straight hair like me, leave hair until 90% dry then flip hair upside down and blast with a hairdryer to add extra volume.

Step Three:

Once dry, rub a little Osis+ Dust It Mattifying Powder into the roots of the hair and shake out. This product will help achieve extra volume at the root; allowing for a volumous style without compromising glossy mid to ends of hair. It’s also another lightweight product that helps to hold hair in place once styled so you’ll have to worry less about the style throughout the evening.

Step Four:

Avoid brushing hair and opt for a fine comb instead, focusing attention on the ends of hair rather than at the root. For curly hair this will maintain curls and for straight hair, it’ll smooth hair at the base. If you’ve got straight or flat hair, gently backcomb  the roots to add a little oomph then tease hair back into a loose pony tail and twist the mid to ends around itself to form a chignon. Pin with some strong hair grips (like these from Hershesons) around the bun, tucking the grips into the hair to ensure they’re not visible. The trick is to not make the style too neat – holiday hair is all about relaxed styles!

Step Five:

Hairspray and warm-weather holidays don’t really mix – opt for a light formula that’s engineered for trips in the sun. ALTERNA Bamboo Smooth Anti-Humidity Hair Spray will withstand the heat, with smoothing kendo oil and bamboo to reduce any resulting frizz.

Quick Tip: If you feel the need, tease out a little hair around the crown to loosen the look.

Why not give it a try and let me know how it goes!
