Alexandra Bayley, Designer and Co-Founder

With the summer festival season almost upon us, I caught up with my friend, Alexandra Bayley, designer and co-founder at the brand to pick up some summer-ready tees and talk about her inspiration –

So, how did it all begin?

After graduating from London College of Fashion, I launched my eponymous demi-couture dress label – once worn by the likes of Lady Victoria Hervey. However, soon after, my best friend Stephanie decided to leave the world of finance and suggested we start a fashion label together…I didn’t think twice. Language of Flowers was born!

What was your inspiration for the brand?

The concept was inspired by the Victorian era, when people would communicate their feelings with each other through the gift of flowers. Every flower you see is symbolic and has its own meaning.

And what about your designs – where do you get your inspiration?

Everything from fine art to street art, as well as childhood fairytales…!

What SS14 trends are you excited to try out?

Stephanie and I are both head over heels for florals, as well as pastel shades. But for something new, I am obsessed with SS14’s flirtatious trend of reveal and conceal.

Me too! Do you have a fashion/style pet hate?

Women who wear heels and can’t walk in them…disaster. Oh, and Crocs I genuinely can’t believe why anyone would ever even consider them an option…ever?!

What’s your no. 1 style rule?

Always have perfect hair and nails. When I was a child my mother told me as long as those two things are perfect then fashion wise, you can try almost anything.

The laid-back and pretty aesthetic of the brand seems perfect for summer festival-wear, which festival, if any, would you want to attend?

I’d adore to go to Coachella! Aside from the music & sunshine, the style and vibe fits perfectly with our LOF vision.

What is your favorite artist/band you’ve seen live?

I saw Kings of Leon last year, which I loved. But recently, Stephanie and I saw Beyonce – she was unreal!

What are the top 3 tracks in your iTunes/Spotify most played list?

I live my life to Hot Chip – Over and Over, Pharrell & Daft Punk – Gust of Wind, and White Noise by Disclosure.

What/whom has been the biggest influence on your style?

My style is constantly evolving. I think in large part due to social media. With a constant stream of new styles and fresh ideas on my favourite fashion blogs, Tumblr and Pinterest, I find amazing ideas & style crushes daily. Also as a London girl, the fashion from Shoreditch to Chelsea is so eclectic you’d have to be blind not to draw inspiration from the incredible street style surrounding us.

Where do you hang out in London?

Our lives and business are based in Chelsea and most Sundays you can find us browsing the goods at Chelsea Farmers Market. Having said that, I studied for my fashion degree in Shoreditch, and I still adore long afternoons snuggled up in Shoreditch House with nothing but peppermint tea and my sketching pencils!

Any exciting summer holiday plans?

At the moment I’m so wrapped up in designing for our new season, I’m trying to pretend summer hasn’t arrived already!

What’s in store for the future?

We’ve just widened our range debuting long sleeve tees, limited edition bejewelled shorts and flower crowns all perfect for festivals this summer! And for next season you’ll just have to wait and see…but you can count on more of our soft as cashmere fabrics, beautiful blooms, shades of sherbet and a collection made for our LOF girls.

Can’t wait! All I need now is a tan…

Now, check out the LOF website and Facebook page for details and updates from the brand.
